Crystallizing the Short Poem, George Szirtes 21/11 /24

Short poems need not be simple. Even a very short form can contain changes of rhythm and tone as well as subtlety of expression. It’s like watching light congregate in a piece of crystal.

There are many varieties of short poems: the elegiac couplet, epigraph, epigram, funerary inscription, riddle, haiku, cinquain, limerick and others. Short poems can be complete as they are, but also retain the possibility of being developed into longer poems.

In this session we will concentrate on the haiku, the cinquain and the tenku (the latter is a form devised by George).

As well as decades of publishing poetry collections, George Szirtes has also worked on many translations, written a memoir and a children’s book, with many awards to his name across genres. This prolific cross-cultural writer has much wisdom to share, including his love of various poetic forms.
